At the invitation of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), US Senator Evan Byah (D-Indiana), chairman of the Subcommittee on International Trade and Finance under the Banking Committee, visited Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai from August 8 to 15, 2010. During his stay in Beijing, Mr. Wang Qishan, Vice Premier of the State Council, Mr. Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People’s Bank of China, Mr. Liu He, Vice Minister of the Office of the Central Leading Group on Financial and Economic Affairs, Mr. Wang Guangya, Vice Foreign Minister, Mr. Gao Xiqing, Vice Chairman of China Investment Corporation met with him respectively. Amb. Chen Yonglong, Vice President of the CPIFA hosted a dinner in Senator Bayh’s honor. Both sides exchanged ideas on Sino-US relations, Sino-US trade and economic cooperation, RMB exchange rate, the US domestic political and economic situation, China’s social and economic development. In Senator Bayh’s view, the US Administration, Congress and the mainstream of the society not only attach great importance to the US-China relations, but also have confidence in promoting the development of Sino-US constructive and cooperative relations. However, the trade imbalance between the two countries is becoming a serious problem. He hopes that China will continue to expand the domestic demand, further push forward and implement a more flexible currency exchange regime based on market supply and demand, so as to achieve the general trade balance between US and China.
