Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Visits China

At the invitation of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, visited Beijing and Guangdong from April 20 to 24, accompanied by his wife and assistants. During the stay in Beijing, H. E. Mr. Li Yuanchao, Vice President of PRC met with him. Tun Dr Mahathir was also received by Amb. Yang Wenchang, President of CPIFA and Mr. Jiang Zengwei, President of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT). In Guangdong, Mr. Xu Jianhua, Municipal Party Secretary and Mr. Yuan Baocheng, Mayor of Dongguan met with Tun Dr Mahathir. Amb. Peng Keyu, Vice President of CPIFA accompanied Tun Dr Mahathir throughout the visit.
Tun Dr Mahathir exchanged views with Chinese sides on areas of China-ASEAN relations, China-Malaysia relations and bilateral cooperation in various fields. Tun Dr Mahathir spoke highly of China’s positive role in regional affairs. He believed that China and Malaysia have great potential in fields such as tourism development and automobile industry. He also expressed his sincere hope that both sides could take the opportunity of the 40th anniversary of bilateral relations and further promote their relationship through friendly exchanges and practical cooperation, such as co-lead of the Zheng He Friendship Association for Economy, Trade and Culture.
