On April 28th, Amb. Zou Xiaoli, Vice-President of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), met with Mr. Chen Jian, Director of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. Director Chen gave a brief introduction about the Museum, and expressed his hope to better tell the story of the Chinese people and Jewish refugees sharing weal and woe during World War II, and to promote people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries. Amb. Zou pointed out that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people’s war of resistance against Japanese aggression and the world anti-fascist war, emphasizing that we should remember history, cherish peace, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. Amb. Zou said that the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs stands ready to strengthen coordination with the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum in this regard.
The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum is the only memorial in China that reflects the historical legacy of Jewish refugees’ lives during World War II. Through nearly 1000 pieces of precious cultural relics and historical materials, more than 160 vivid personal stories, more than 10 recreated scenes, and the “The Wall of Names of Jewish Refugees in Shanghai” engraved with 18578 names, the museum vividly and authentically exhibits the history of European Jewish refugees who came to Shanghai in the 1930s and 1940s to escape Nazi persecution and forge deep bonds with the Chinese people.
Ms. Zhang Lu, Deputy Secretary General of CPIFA was present at the meeting.
